Most people treat stress as a feeling — something in the head that comes and goes with a deadline, a difficult conversation, or a busy week. In reality, the effects of stress are deeply physical. The proposed pathway is striking: stress-related brain activity appears to signal the bone marrow to produce more inflammatory white blood cells, which drive inflammation in the arteries. In other words, chronic stress does not just feel bad. It leaves a measurable, inflammatory fingerprint on the cardiovascular system.
Stress also reshapes digestion. Through the gut–brain axis, sustained stress alters gut motility, sensitivity, and the balance of the microbiome, which is one reason stress so reliably worsens symptoms in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The gut is densely wired to the nervous system, so when the nervous system is under load, the gut tends to feel it too.

2. Try a physiological sigh (cyclic sighing)
For a faster reset, use the "cyclic sighing" pattern studied at Stanford: a full inhale through the nose, a second short sip of air to fully expand the lungs, then a long, slow exhale through the mouth. In a randomised trial of over 100 people, five minutes a day of this practice produced greater improvements in mood and a bigger drop in resting breathing rate than mindfulness meditation over a month. Even two or three physiological sighs are enough to take the edge off an acute stress spike.
3. Build recovery into your calendar
The most underrated breathing tool is simply making room to use it. A Microsoft study using EEG found that back-to-back meetings caused stress-related brain activity to accumulate steadily through the day, while short breaks between meetings reset it and kept stress levels flat. Changing your default meeting length from 30 minutes to 25 (or 60 to 50) hands you a few minutes to stand up, take ten slow breaths, and let your nervous system settle before the next demand. It is a tiny structural change with a genuine physiological payoff.
Stress will always be part of a demanding life, and it is not the enemy. The goal is not to eliminate it, but to make sure the system switches off as reliably as it switches on. Your breath is the most accessible tool you have for that, and a few minutes of it, used well and often, is one of the simplest ways to protect both how you feel and how your body ages.
